Sophisticated, soulful and daring are all words that have been used to describe Pearly Black, a singer of unusual breadth and versatility. Once described as an “unholy cross between Nick Cave and Shirley Bassey”, Pearly’s enormously eclectic repertoire has ranged over many genres from dark rock, Gospel and even disco through to Flamenco, Latin and Bulgarian folklorica. Her voice is the perfect blend of power and sensuality.

Pearly first came to prominence in 1990 when she and fellow musical adventurer, John Rodgers, created the sex-and-death-cabaret-rock band Madam Bones Brothel. This colourful and inspired group developed a devoted cult following in Brisbane and Melbourne and produced two superb albums of thoroughly unique music. John Rodgers is now an internationally renowned  composer of contemporary music and still enjoys a rich creative relationship with Pearly, often calling on her to perform his works such as The Dream Catchers (2007) and his latest recorded work, The Uncaring Wind (2010).

Since those early colourful days making a ruckus in Brisbane, Pearly has refined and honed her skills through preforming and recording in many diverse musical settings, including Cuban, Brazilian and Tango (in Las Tangolitas with Phil McLeod), Cabaret (Women In Voice 2008, the Matilda Award winning cabaret Tom Waits For No Man 2008), Gospel music (Tell Heaven All Star Gospel Revue), brooding Folk Noire with Robin Casinader. Never one to sit musically still, Pearly has most recently been studying Flamenco music with one of Australia's foremost proponents of the tradition, Manolo Varela. In addition she has been touring a two-hander with singing sister Leah Cotterell, presenting jazz standards and thinking person's pop.

The consistent element in this ever-varying landscape is Pearly's glorious voice. She brings her precise vocal skill and sophisticated delivery to any material she is working with, while her humanity and insight ensure a warm, human and thrilling experience.
